It is said in the Skanda Purana that any who is a devotee of Lord Shiva and observes the Maha Shivratri fast becomes divine. He consumes all the great pleasures and finally attains salvation. According to Ishaan Samhita, it annihilates the sins of 12 years or 24 years. This fast gives complete enjoyment and salvation.

Maha Shivratri is called the night of union of Shiva and Shakti. There are 12 Shivaratris in a year. But Shivaratri which falls in Phalgun month is given more importance in Hinduism and it is also known as Maha Shivratri. On this day people observe fast to get blessings of Lord Shiva. It is believed that worshiping Lord Shiva with a true heart on this day removes all the troubles of life and Shiva devotees get all the comforts of life.

On the day of Maha Shivratri, a large crowd of Shiva devotees visit the temples to see their deities. Chanting of songs in temples begin from mornings. In many places, cannabis is distributed as Prasad on this day because hemp is very dear to Lord Shiva. On the day of Maha Shivratri, all types of doshas end in the horoscope and troubles related to the planets also end. According to the scriptures, Lord Shiva wanders all over the world on the day of Maha Shivaratri and whoever wakes up at night on this day and worships Lord Shiva; receives the infinite grace of Lord Shiva.
